Tetrafluoroethylene is prepared by introducing 70 to 90 mole per cent of superheated steam (based on the total amount of feed materials) into preheated chlorodifluoromethane, passing the gases into a zone where complete mixing of the two gases and pyrolysis of the chlorodifluoromethane is effected, the reaction gases being subjected to adiabatic expansion during and/or after pyrolysis, and subsequently cooling the reaction gases. Preferably the steam is preheated to 800-1200 DEG C., the chlorodifluoromethane preheated to 400 to 500 DEG C., the pyrolysis effected at 700 to 850 DEG C. and the reaction gases cooled by ejection of water or steam directly into the product stream. A suitable apparatus for effecting the reaction is that described and claimed in Specification 1,041,592.
