<p>A multicolor image reproduction machine (500) includes a main assembly having a biased image bearing member (502), a controller (15), and a plurality of color separation toner image forming units (100,200,300,400) each having a photoreceptor (112,212,312,412) including a photoconductive surface (113) forming a toner image separation development nip (512,522,532,542) with the image bearing member (502). Each imaging unit (100,200,300,400) includes a toner supply apparatus (150,250,350,450) for applying a layer of toner (158) of a particular color onto the photoconductive surface (113); a first charging device (130) for uniformly charging the photoconductive surface (113) mounted downstream of the imaging unit relative to movement of the photoreceptor; an exposure device (140,240,340,440) connected to the controller (15) for image-wise exposing the photoconductive surface (113) and the layer of toner (158) to form therein image areas (172) and background areas (174) of a desired image mounted downstream of the first charging device relative to movement of the photoconductor; and a second charging device (160) connected to the controller (15) for selectively reversing charge in the background areas (174) of the desired image, so as to enable subsequent separation of the background areas (174) from the image areas (172) mounted downstream of the exposure device relative to movement of the photoreceptor. The multicolor image reproduction machine (500) further includes a separation development assembly for separating and developing the image areas (172) of the desired image from the layer of toner (158) and onto the image bearing member (502) of the main assembly to form a multicolor toner image at the image separation nip (512,522,532,542). <IMAGE></p> |
