In an electronic calculating apparatus comprising a plurality of orders of digit keys K (Fig. 1, not shown), on which a multiplicand may be set and a register comprising a plurality of electric-pulse-operated counting devices R in which a multiplier may be stored, the digits of the multiplier are successively removed from the register and the multiplicand is entered into the register counting devices a number of times equal to the value of the removed digit. The digit removed from the register is entered into a buffer store BR in complement form when a bi-stable device BC is in an unset state and when the bi-stable device BC is subsequently in the set state the numbers on the keyboard K are entered into the register counting devices R a number of times until the buffer store BR registers zero. The counting devices R are gated RG with pulses from a first timing device TR and pulses H produced during a period determined by a second timing device TK which controls gates KG to a common line K for the keyboard K. A carry store CS is set when any counting device R passes through zero which subsequently sets the bistable device BC controlling pulses through a gate G11 to the counting devices R on the H line. The timing devices TR, TK are stepped so that in a first stage the three highest digits set on the keyboard K are entered in the three lowest counting devices R and the adjacent denominational digit is removed, and in subsequent stages one stepping pulse of the second timing device TK is suppressed to provide four, five ... denominations in the register for entering the product. |
