Cutting device for cutting a top part (16) off a preform (15) for a plastic container (15a) which is intended to be filled with a medium, in particular a foodstuff, in which an encircling cutting groove (17) which demarcates the top part (16) with respect to the container (15a), is present in a circumferential wall part of the preform (15), a cutting member (8) for cutting the top part (16) off the preform (15) along the cutting groove (17), with positioning means (2) for positioning the cutting groove (17) of the preform (15) with respect to the cutting member (8) and with drive means (27) for displacing the cutting member (8) about a centre axis of the circumferential wall part of the preform (15). In this cutting device, the positioning means (2) are designed to engage in the cutting groove (17), the positioning means (2) being provided at substantially the same height as the cutting member (8).
