An electronic device operable to form part of a network where a transmitter transmits a beacon signal which includes information about the transmitter's capabilities and a receiver to receive a similar signal from a remote device. The device compares the capabilities of the remote device with its own capabilities, and signals to arrange that, in future communication the most appropriate of the two devices controls the network. The criteria comprises at least one of processing power, availability bandwidth, type of power source or remaining power source level. It is also possible for a new device to join the network. May be used in Personal Area Networks (PAN's) and may use a heterogeneous control channel to run the network, similar to existing Bluetooth, UMTS or WiFi systems. |
