An automotive piston engine has a hydraulic unit that alters the angle at which a camshaft is presented to a crankshaft, and a vacuum pump for a servo-brake. The vacuum pump is located axially opposite the hydraulic unit, on a common longitudinal axis with the assembly mounted on the cylinder head. The camshaft has supplementary link fittings to the vacuum pump drive shaft. Vacuum pump lubrication is effected using engine oil supplied via a central link pipe located over the pump drive shaft and extending to the camshaft.
