A method and an apparatus for converting data formats and requesting a data conversion in a media server are provided to enhance user convenience by using a control point for detecting a convertible format in the media server. An apparatus for converting data formats and requesting a data conversion includes a format searching unit(260) and a format converting unit(270). When a conversion request of a data format is received from a control point, the format searching unit searches for a convertible format and transmits the result to the control point. The format converting unit converts the data into the format, which is selected by the control point. The format searching unit includes a request receiver(261), a searching unit(262), a format information receiver(271), and a converting unit(272). The searching unit searches for the convertible format in response to a request, which is received at the request receiver. The converting unit converts the data into a received format, which is received at the format information receiver.
