Atherectomy unit includes a flexible tubular body (12) with proximal and distal ends, and a rotatable drive shaft (24) passing through the body. It further includes a rotatable cutting tool (22) joined to the drive shaft at the distal end (16) of the body. The cutting tool is provided with a cutting thread (46) which at least partially encircles it, and is at least partially discontinuous. An independent claim is also included for a method for removal of material from a blood vessel. It involves application of vacuum to the material removal channel.
