The method involves determining dead time or a dead crank angle with the reception of a shifting requirement, where the dead time or a dead crank angle is required for shut down or re-opening of inlet or outlet valves of one of multiple cylinders (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40). One of the cylinders is selected based on point of time and crank angle of the reception of the switching requirements in consideration of the determined dead time or the dead crank angle. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating an internal combustion engine. |
