Apparatus, e.g. a rolling mill stand, has a vertical shaft supported in bearings 2 themselves supported in respective bearing housings 5, 6 having part spherical outer surfaces which engage respective rings 13, the rings being secured in respective holes in support member 7, cylindrical hollow cups 12a passing through openings in the rings and being spring-loaded against the part-spherical surfaces. On radial deflection of the roll 1, bearing housings 5, 6 rotate about a horizontal axis and thus ensure uniform loading on each row of the roller bearings 2. The spring-loaded cups 12a prevent rotation of housings 5, 6 about their vertical axes. Springs 12 loading the cups 12a are adjustable. Tapered roller bearings 3 have their outer races axially spring-loaded. Covers 8, 10, 11, 16 enclose the bearings. |
