Woven and knitted fabrics, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate and cotton fabrics and fabrics made from yarns of polyurethane segmented polymers covered with staple fibres of polyethylene terephthalate or cotton, and finished by a process in which desizing, scouring and bleaching are performed in a single bath by heating them together with an aqueous liquid containing (1) at least one ester compound by Caro's acid with an alcohol of 12-18 carbon atoms, (2) hydrogen peroxide and (3) an alkaline agent. The ester compounds of Caro's acid with the alcohols which may be present in a concentration of 0.5-5% by weight may be in the form of the esters or of water-soluble ester salts, e.g. alkali metal salts. The concentration of the hydrogen peroxide may be 1-25% by weight and may be used in the form of an aqueous solution or in the form of a peroxide, e.g. Na2O2. Specified alkaline agents, which may be present in a concentration equivalent to 0.5-3% by weight of NaOH, are sodium, potassium, lithium, ammonium and calcium hydroxide, sodium and potassium carbonate and sodium silicate. The treating liquid may also contain a non-ionic surface active agent, e.g. polyoxyethylene alkyl phenyl ethers and polyoxyethylene alkyl ethers, an anionic surface active agent, e.g. soap, sodium alkylbenzene sulphonate, sodium salts of sulphuric acid esters with higher alcohols, and sodium salts of oleic acid, methyl taurine and sperm oil alcohol sulphuric acid ester, a fluorescent brightening agent, e.g. a , b -di-(benzoxazole-(2))-ethylene and 4-methoxynaphthalic acid-N-methylimide, a dyeing carrier when fluorescent brightening agents are used, e.g. dimethyl terephthalate, chlorobenzene and butyl benzoate, and an alkali or alkaline earth metal silicate, e.g. sodium or calcium silicate. The fabrics may be impregnated to a wet pick-up of at least 70% by weight with the aqueous liquid by dipping, padding or spraying, if necessary squeezed, and steam heated at 90 DEG -100 DEG C. for 30-90 minutes. They may subsequently be washed with water, dried and heat-set. |
