Yeast cells are propagated in a sugar-containing nutrient medium comprising an aqueous sugar solution to which there has been added 3-18 parts by weight of a citric acid recovery liquer per part by weight of the sugar. The liquor is obtained by separating the mycelium and citric acid (as the calcium salt) from a citric acid fermentation liquor. The nutrient medium may contain (1) a mixture of beet molasses and blackstrap molasses, between 1% and 15% by weight of the beet molasses having been replaced by 1-3 parts by weight of the citric acid recovery liquor per part by weight of the molasses mixture, or (2) a mixture of beet molasses and blackstrap molasses to which there has been added 1.5-9 parts by weight of the citric acid recovery liquor per part by weight of the molasses mixture. The citric acid recovery liquor may be employed concentrated to 1/15th of its initial volume.
