A device and a method for controlling operation of an air conditioner having a plurality of compressors are provided to divide operation areas in detail according to room temperatures and set temperatures for operating the air conditioner in a minimum operation area when an operation step approaches the set temperature, thereby reducing power consumption and preventing frequent on/off operations of the compressors. A device for controlling operation of an air conditioner having a plurality of compressors includes a temperature input part(21) for receiving a set temperature input by a user, and a temperature detecting part(22) for detecting a room temperature. An operation control part(23) compares the detected room temperature with a reference temperature based on the input set temperature, and operates the air conditioner gradually according to a set operation mode corresponding to the comparison result. A driving part(24) drives the compressors according to a control signal of the operation control part.
