An apparatus and a method for compressing image data are provided to reduce an operating frequency of a processor which processes an image, reduce the power consumption of the apparatus, and reduce the compression time of the image data. A component separating unit(410) separates inputted image data into Y(luminance) component data and C(Chrominance) component data. A Y component processing unit(420) compresses the Y component data. A C component processing unit(430) compresses the C component data. A component combining unit(440) combines the Y component data and the C component data compressed in the Y component processing unit(420) and the C component processing unit(430).
