The environmental condition detec-tor (6-i) is for providing an early warning of the presence of an environmental condition (smoke or carbon monoxide gas, etc.) to persons in remote areas of a build-ing. The detector (6-1) sensing the envi-ronmental condition emits an audible tonal pattern alarm (fig. 3-7), while transmit-ting a radio signal directly to other envi-ronmental condition detectors (6-2 to 6-n) to activate their alarms and to activate an electronically stored human voice record-ing (or synthesized voice) that indicates the location of the environmental condition detector sensing the environmental condi-tion, or the type of environmental condi-tion, or both. Rechargeable light modules (130, 140, 150) separate from the detector are included that receive the signal from the detector (170, 180) and illuminate areas and paths of egress for the duration of the alarm condition or in case of power failure (160).
