Cellulose in the form of textile fibres and fabrics, particularly regenerated cellulose, is treated with formaldehyde in the presence of zinc fluoborate. The cellulose may be impregnated with an aqueous solution of formaldehyde and zinc fluoborate and cured, e.g. by heating at 100 to 180 DEG C. The solution may contain 0.5 to 6% of formaldehyde and 0.3 to 3.5% of zinc fluoborate and may have a pH of 1 to 5, preferably 2 to 5. The quantity of zinc fluorborate applied to the cellulose may be at least 0.2 gram, and preferably 0.35 to 4.5 grams, per 100 grams of dry cellulose. The process improves the resistance of the cellulose to swelling by water and permits of the mercerisation of regenerated cellulose fabrics and improves their dry crease recovery. The cellulose may be in the form of never-dried viscose rayon fibre (see Division B5). The process is said to crosslink the cellulose. Specification 930,132 is referred to.
