The invention relates to a method for cleaning and restoring a hydrophobic effect of textiles (7) in a domestic washing machine. Said washing machine comprises devices (13, 12) for heating soapy water present in a wash tub (1) and for controlling treatment steps, and detergent reservoirs (111 and 112), at least one (112) of which is adapted to store an individual dose of a liquid washing auxiliary. According to said method, hydrophobic substances dissolved in the soapy water (6) are contacted with the textiles (7) during a treatment process Phl2 which is similar to a washing process PhW. The aim of the invention is to allow the above treatment to be carried out in domestic washing machines and to proceed in a coherent manner. Another aim of the invention is to substantially increase the hydrophobic effect achieved by this novel method. For this purpose, a washing process PhB, PhW for cleaning the textiles (7) while adding a special detergent which, in addition to the known dirt-removing effects, is also suitable for removing any detergent substances that may still adhere to the textiles, is carried out in the presence of an inflow of fresh water, and at the end thereof, the used soapy water (6) is pumped off. Once the washing process PhW is finished, the soapy water used for the preceding process is replaced and a multi-stage rinsing process PhSp is carried out for the textiles (7). After termination of the rinsing process, the last rinsing water is replaced and the hydrophobic substances are added to a newly supplied amount of fresh water, and a treatment process Phl1, Phl2, Phl3 for waterproofing the textiles (7) is carried out in an additive-containing soapy water V and the used additive-containing soapy water is removed without repeating the rinsing process.
