A chair seat support 20 attached to a first hinge member 4 pivots about hinge pins 19 relative to a second hinge member 1, fixed to the chair support column 21 by a bracket 3, against the action of a spring member 12 acting between the hinge member 1 and 4, the limit of rotary movement being reached when edge 11 of member 4 contacts the base of member 1. A torque applied by the spring to resist rotation of the seat may be varied by moving the spring radially to or from the pivot axis by means of a captive screw 18 in threaded engagement with a spring holder 14 thereby altering the moment applied by the spring to the hinged parts. A bar 22a pivoted to the fixed members 1 at 23 and coupled to the seat 20 through a link 25, supports the chair back, thus allowing the chair back to tilt more than the seat. Other forms of spring member may be employed.</p> |
