A process for the polymerization of a hydrocarbon stock including at least one ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon containing 2-4 carbon atoms, to produce a solid polymer comprises contacting the stock with a catalyst comprising a transition metal oxide on an oxide support to which has been added AlK3, where R is hydrocarbon, the support oxide having a particle diameter of <0.2 m and an apparent density of <0.1 gm./c.c., polymerization being effected at superatmospheric pressure at 0-350 DEG C. Specified feedstocks include ethylene, propylene, 1-butene, 1-pentene, 1-hexene and mixtures thereof. Also mentioned are 1:3 butadiene, isoprene, 1:5-hexadiene and styrene. Examples are given.ALSO:A polymerization catalyst is made by extending a transitional metal oxide on a support oxide which has a particle diameter of less than 0.2m and an apparent density of less than 0.1 gram/cc. Specified transition metals are Zr, Os, Ni, Ti, Hf, Fe, W, Co, Mo, V and Cr. Oxide carriers are Al2O3, MgO, TiO2, B2O3, ZrO2, SiO2 or composites e.g. alumino-silicates. D2O5 may be added to the carrier Trialkyl aluminium compounds may be added to polymerization catalysts as above to effect polymerization of olefin containing feed stocks. Examples are given.
|
