A laser welding apparatus and a method for controlling the same are provided to perform a welding work while maintaining the interval of plating panels uniformly, and to perform the laser welding for the plating panels effectively by lifting up an upper arm through a first linear servo motor and lifting down a lower arm through a second linear servo motor. A laser welding apparatus comprises first and second linear servo motors(110,120), a laser head(200), an upper arm(300), a lower arm(400), and a pair of distance sensors(510,520). The linear servo motors are placed to two vertical surfaces of a bracket(130) to be lifted up and down. The laser head is supported by the first linear servo motor. The upper arm is supported by one side of the laser head to be integrally lifted up and down. A lower end of the upper arm is arranged with an electromagnet and a slope roller. The lower arm is supported by the second linear servo motor to be integrally lifted up and down and arranged with an electromagnet and a slope roller matching the upper arm. The distance sensors are placed to the upper and lower arms respectively to detect the mutual distance. The bracket is supported by an articulated robot to be moved to various angles and positions. The upper arm is lifted up by operating the first linear servo motor, and the lower arm is lifted down by operating the second linear servo motor.
