A drive method capable of suppressing peak current by providing a limit to a current consumed or increasing the image contrast to display a clear image. When driving an EL display device having a switch element for controlling ON/OFF of the current path between the drive transistor and the EL element in each pixel, a drive method used totals image data or data based on the image data and sets the OFF period of the switch element longer when the totaled data amount is greater, thereby suppressing the peak current and increasing the contrast.
