A home network system and a control method thereof are provided to control each of electric appliances on a home network and use VOIP through a home gateway. A home network system comprises plural household electronic appliances(132-138), a terminal(120) and a home gateway(110). The household electronic appliances(132-138) are arranged on a home network such that they are interlinked with the home network. The terminal(120) performs a remote control function for controlling the household electronic appliances(132-138) at a remote place or a communication function based on VoIP at the selection of the user. The home gateway(110) connects the home network to an external network, and has a VoIP communication unit for performing a VoIP based communication.
