A gas discharge display apparatus is provided to improve largely luminance voltage residual image characteristics by reducing the amount of reduction gas and carbonization gas. A gas discharge display apparatus includes a pair of substrates facing each other to define a discharge space, pairs of row electrodes(X,Y) and column electrodes(D) arranged between the substrates, pair of row electrodes and column electrode being extended in directions at right angles to each other to form unit light emission areas in discharge spaces of intersections, a dielectric layer for coating the pairs of row electrodes, a protective layer for coating the dielectric layer and facing the unit light emission areas, and red, green and blue phosphor layers for generating visible light by using vacuum ultraviolet light. The discharge spaces are filled with discharge gas. The protective layer includes a magnesium oxide crystal having a crystalline structure which causes a cathode-luminescence emission having a peak within a wavelength range of 200 nm to 300 nm. The magnesium oxide crystal is excited by electron beams. One or more colored phosphor layers of colored phosphor layers include the phosphor which is formed by mixing a first phosphor and a second phosphor for generating the amounts of reduction gas and carbonization gas smaller than the amount of reduction gas and carbonization gas generated by the first phosphor.
