A method for providing a file in a media server is provided to strengthen security and a search function by encrypting and providing URL information of a media content file to a player connected through a network. An external device, such as a player(150), connected through a network requests information about a file system, which includes a directory storing the media content files, to a media server(170). An object ID of the media content file is generated by encrypting name of the media content file together with URL of the directory through a hash algorithm. The file system information including the object ID of the media content file is provided to the external device instead of the name of the media content file. The media content file requested by the external device is provided based on the file system information.
