Treating a sludge from steelworks comprising water, zinc, iron, lead, carbon and heavy metals, comprises mechanically treating large particles to separate fine particles, separating by cycloning to obtain a overflow of small particles, leaching the overflow with a 15% acid solution and recovering the leachate at a pH of 0.55, adding crude sludge containing zinc hydroxide to bingback the pH to 1.5, precipitating the iron in the form of iron oxide hydroxide by bringing back the pH to 3.8 by adding soda and filtering the iron oxide and recovering the liquid phase. Treating a sludge from steelworks comprising water ( 50%), zinc (28%), iron (7%), lead (7.5%), where the balance being carbon and heavy metals, comprises mechanically treating large particles by friction of particles against each other to separate fine particles, separating by cycloning, particularly by hydrocycloning to obtain a overflow of particles that are being small and constituting the majority of the composition, leaching the overflow with a 15% acid solution and recovering the leachate at a pH of 0.55, adding crude sludge containing zinc hydroxide to bingback the pH to 1.5, precipitating the iron in the form of iron oxide hydroxide by bringing back the pH of leachate to 3.8 by adding soda and filtering the iron oxide and recovering the liquid phase.
