An image synthesis device for synthesizing a 2D background image to a 3D space and a method therefor are provided to use a 2D image as a background of a 3D image according to the making purpose and liking of a user, synthesize a 3D character to the 2D image, and synthesize the 2D background image configuring an image to the 3D space. An initialization setup unit(501) sets a space of a 3D image to be made as an image plane and a bottom plane. An image selecting unit(504) selects a 2D background image to be synthesized to a 3D image from a background image database(510) in which background images of a user are stored from the selection of the user. A coordinate converting unit(505) converts data of the 2D background image selected in the image selecting unit(504) into a coordinate value on the image plane of the 3D image. An image synthesizing unit(502) maps and inserts the 2D background image converted in the coordinate converting unit(505) on the image plane of the 3D image to be made.
