A cathode active material for a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery is provided to impart high capacity, high cost efficiency and thermal stability to a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery. A cathode active material for a non-aqueous secondary battery comprises a lithium nickel composite oxide powder obtained by washing fired powder of an oxide represented by the formula of LiNi1-aMaO2(wherein M is at least one element selected from the group consisting of transition metal elements other than Ni and Group 2 and Group 13 elements, and a ranges from 0.01 to 0.5) with water, followed by filtering and drying, wherein the lithium nickel composite oxide powder has a specific surface area of 0.3-2.0 m^2/g after the washing step.
