A direct cooling type refrigerator and a control method thereof are provided to improve user convenience by discharging defrosting water according to needs of the user as well as discharging it according to set program. A direct cooling type refrigerator comprises a storage, a washstand pipe, a drain hose(11), a drain valve(20), a control unit, and an opening/closing switch. The washstand pipe is formed in the storage. The drain hose guides drainage connected with the washstand pipe. The drain valve is installed to the drain hose, and opens/closes the drain hose. The control unit controls the opening/closing operation of the drain valve according to set time. The opening/closing switch is connected to the drain valve and opens/closes the drain valve independently of the control unit.
