The method involves detecting an overload, in a router (R3), on a link located on an alternating path utilized by a router (R2) for transmitting a stream of data packets from the latter router to a destination router (R5). An upstream multi-path forwarding adjustment instruction (UMFA), requiring to partially remove a routing of the data packet stream to the alternating path, is sent by the router (R3) to the router (R2). An independent claim is also included for a router connected via a set of links to other routers in a telecommunication network.
