A method for searching an optimum tilt operating point in an optical disc system is provided to improve performance of recording/reproducing by determining a negative direction(-L/8) having the lowest jitter value. A method for searching an optimum tilt operating point in an optical disc system comprises the steps of measuring(S201) jitter by controlling a tilt to a positive direction(+L/2) and a negative direction(-L/2) according to a predetermined interval(L/2) around the center, determining(S202) the positive direction(+L/2), the negative direction(-L/2), and the center, measuring(S203) jitter by controlling the tilt to the positive direction(+L/4) and the negative direction(-L/4) according to the predetermined interval(L/4) around the determined direction, determining(S205) the positive direction(+L/4) and the negative direction(-L/4), measuring(S206) jitter by controlling the tilt to the positive direction(+L/8) and the negative direction(-L/8) according to the predetermined interval(L/8) around the determined direction, and selecting(S208) the tilt as an optimum point after determining the positive direction(+L/8) and the negative direction(-L/8).
