<p>#CMT# #/CMT# The method involve generating authentication information related to an intrinsic physical characteristic of a substrate (21) and independent of data contained in a bar code (20) in an automatic manner when presenting the bar code to a barcode reading system. The bar code is allowed to be read only in an event of a positive authentication of the substrate. Access to one part of the data contained in the bar code and/or to any data potentially associated with the bar code is prevented in the event of a negative authentication of the substrate. #CMT# : #/CMT# An independent claim is also included for a system for reading a bar code. #CMT#USE : #/CMT# Used for reading a bar code e.g. digital barcode such as European article number 8(EAN8), EAN13, universal product code (UPC) or international standard book number (ISBN), alphanumeric bar code such as code 39 or code 128, portable data file 417 (PDF 417), Data Matrix, Maxi code or quick response (QR) code type bar code, PDB(RTM: Not defined) code, two dimensional (2D) superscript barcode, one dimensional type (1D) type bar code and CMC7 code, carried by a substrate (claimed) made of paper and plastic and attached to an article such as garment, for identifying and authenticating the article. #CMT#ADVANTAGE : #/CMT# The method permits to reinforce the security for reading the bar code against an tentative reproduction while linking the barcode to the substrate carrying the code, thus improving the authentication of the article. The method permits to easily detect the fraudulent reproduction, by photocopy, of the barcode on the substrate which does not have the expected intrinsic physical characteristic, at the time of reading of the bar code. #CMT#DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS : #/CMT# The drawing shows a system for reading a bar code. 1 : Bar code reading system 4 : Computer 5 : Handle 20 : Bar code 21 : Substrate.</p> |
