A method and an apparatus for communicating fax data over the internet are provided to perform a new FRP/RTP type communication even without using a conventional gateway by embedding or integrating a new function with an internet enabling device. The apparatus for communicating fax data over the internet comprises a fax receiver(902), a fax relay protocol primary packetizer(903), a fax relay protocol packetizer(904), and a RTP(Real Time Protocol) packetizer(971). The fax receiver(902) is adapted to generate a data set from an analog fax transmission. The fax relay protocol primary packetizer(903) is coupled to the fax receiver(902) and adapted to generate a fax relay protocol primary packet from the data set. The fax relay protocol packetizer(904) is coupled to the fax relay protocol primary packetizer(903) and adapted to generate a fax relay protocol packet from the fax relay protocol primary packet. The RTP packetizer is adapted to encapsulate the fax relay protocol packet.
