PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shift operating device of an automatic transmission capable of properly changing the range of shift operation from a specified range. SOLUTION: When determining position of a shift lever 31 by shift operation from a parking position (position P), a determination whether a parking lock release switch 17 as a change permission operating element is pushed or not within a predetermined time set by a timer is done, and a range change of the automatic transmission is instructed for permission by continuously pushing the parking lock release switch 17 till other positions (position R, position D and position N) of the shift lever 31 are determined. In the case of operating shift by a driver, even if the parking lock release switch 17 is pushed at the same time when starting the shift operation or within a predetermined delay time, since the shift operation can be surely determined, operability is improved.
