A system and method for automatically setting a standby screen image using multimedia contents are provided to prevent a recipient to designate the other party that can provide multimedia contents to herself/himself, in advance, thereby preventing spam multimedia contents from being set as a standby screen image of his/her mobile phone regardless of his/her intention. A service system receives information about a designated recipient that will receive multimedia contents from a provider and stores it in a database(S310). When a list of providers is requested by the recipient(S320), the list of providers is provided to the recipient and information about a selected provider from which the recipient wants to receive multimedia contents is received and stored in the database(S330). When multimedia contents are provided from the provider(S340), the recipient who wants to receive the multimedia contents from the provider is checked by referring to the database(S350). When the recipient has designated the provider as a desired provider from which the multimedia contents will be received(S350), the service system converts received multimedia contents into a format suitable for a terminal of the recipient(S360). The service system transmits the converted multimedia contents to the terminal(S370). A standby screen image automatically controlling application of the terminal of the recipient automatically sets the received multimedia contents as a standby screen image of the terminal of the recipient(S380).
