<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electro-optical apparatus and a projector improving light use efficiency. <P>SOLUTION: The width T1 of a groove 40 is preferably the range of T3≤T1≤T3+2t. The width T1 of the groove 40 of the prism element 30 of the invention is T1≥T3+2t, which is within the range (the maximum of the range). Accordingly, light transmitted through the pixel area of a counter substrate 2 can be made incident on a projection lens 114 to the maximum without being substantially absorbed by light shielding parts 23 and 33.
