PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a step-out of a stepping motor or gear jumping in the transfer mechanism of an optical pickup. SOLUTION: The optical pickup 310 is transferred in the radial direction of an optical disk 10 by the stepping motor 100. A control part 330 which receives a seek operation instruction from a host device, drives the stepping motor 100 through a controller 340 and seeks the optical pickup 310 to a target address. When a stepper pointer indicating the rotational extent of the stepping motor 100 generates logical discrepancy, the control part 330 judges that the step-out of the stepping motor or a gear jumping occurs. When an address indicated by a stepper pointer value and an actual address are different, the occurrence of the step-out of the stepping motor or the gear jumping is also judged. When the step-out of the stepping motor or the gear jumping occurs in the transfer mechanism, the rotational speed of a spindle motor 11 or the stepping motor 100 is decreased.
