Apparatus for detecting failures of nuclear fuel elements in a nuclear reactor comprises a first column filled with a molecular sieve M.S. -13X and adapted to receive a sample of gases from the interior of the reactor, which gases include, in the event of a nuclear fuel element failure, radioactive A, Kr and Xe produced as a result of the failure, the column serving to deliver separately with a definite time interval therebetween an A-Kr mixture and Xe, a second column filled with a molecular sieve M.S.-5A or activated charcoal and adapted to receive a further sample of said gases and to deliver separately A and Kr with a definite time interval therebetween, and detector means for measuring the radioactivity of the said mixture and of the individual gases as separately delivered by the columns. Since all the Kr and Xe occurring in a reactor are fission products of U-235, any fuel element failure can be detected with considerable accuracy, by detection of such Kr and Xe, without being influenced by the presence of any other radioactive nuclides. |
