A method for locally coloring a part made of a metal oxide type ceramic material is provided to obtain patterns having a reduced contrast. A method for locally coloring a part made of a metal oxide type ceramic material includes the steps of: providing a support for the part and a laser capable of moving relative to each other in an XY plane; plasma-treating the part using a gas containing at least one element selected from nitrogen and carbon in order to convert a surface layer of metal oxide into a stoichiometric ceramic selected from metal nitrides and metal carbides; locally illuminating the part with a laser beam in order to provide a sufficient amount of energy to cause a local change in color by changing a stoichiometry of the surface layer; and scanning the surface of the part using the laser beam in order to form a determined pattern. |
