PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent permanent deformation of a pressure contact nip area without increasing the costs and sizes of the main body of an apparatus and a fixing unit, to facilitate removal of a recording material jammed in a fixing unit. SOLUTION: The fixing unit T includes the pressure contact nip area N for heating a recording material with an image held thereon; a pressure application means for applying pressure in order to form the pressure contact nip area N; and a pressure alteration mechanism having cams 191 and 192 acting on the pressure application mechanism and altering pressure on the pressure contact nip area N by rotating the cams 191 and 192. In the fixing unit T, the cams 191 and 192 are disposed on the rotation shaft 32 of a conveyance roller 32 which is disposed in the fixing unit T and with which a recording medium comes into contact.
