PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having improved electromagnetic transducing characteristics, especially high density recording characteristics, excellent durability and a drastically improved error rate in a high density recording region. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has a magnetic layer formed by dispersing ferromagnetic metal powder in a binder is provided on a supporting body, wherein the ferromagnetic metal powder in the magnetic layer is 10 to 45 nm in average major axis length, and 2 to 9 at% in a content ratio of Y to Fe.
