The method involves placing a portable data medium (10) e.g. smart card, and an accessory equipment into a tradable package e.g. outer package, where the data medium carries a secret code and identification information. The outer package is designed as partially transparent, so that a viewing side of the medium is recognizable, and the outer package is individualized through reproduction of the information on an outer side of the medium. The information is superimposed on a lower side of the medium and is read from the medium after the medium is placed in the outer package. An independent claim is also included for a portable data medium.
