The device has a base component (21) e.g. plug-in card, with a diagnostic device interface comprising a diagnostic device communication controller provided for connecting a diagnostic device (10). A module (23) has a communication transceiver that forms a test interface (38) for a communication interface (50) e.g. communication network, of a device e.g. motor vehicle, to be tested. The base component and the module have a test interface controller that is configurable by a loadable operating software for communication with the interface of the device to be tested. An independent claim is also included for a method for adapting a coupling device to the communication interface.
