The method involves providing an internal combustion engine with catalyzers and a lambda sensor. A temporal lambda-characteristic (11) of a lambda-pre-control is partially loaded during a pre-heating phase of an exhaust gas cleaning system of the engine by a high frequent modulation in such a manner that a temporal lambda-center value (12) with lambda greater than 1 is provided in the phase and a lambda-value with lambda less than 1 is obtained.
