PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader in which a shading correction mechanism can be constituted easily of small number of components, and image reading operation can be carried out smoothly even in case of a thick document. SOLUTION: A reading unit 61 comprises a member 16 for holding a contact glass 15, a line image sensor 11 for reading out the image of a document conveyed, a color reference member 17 arranged at a position on the contact glass different from the reading position, and a mechanism for moving the line image sensor 11 and the color reference member 17 relatively such that the document and the color reference member can be read out alternately. A drive section 10 is held on a lower frame 82 for supporting a reading unit 62 and drives both a going straight cam 18 in the reading unit 61 and a going straight cam 18 in the reading unit 62.
