PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a high-definition image at high speed by detecting the toner concentration of a full color image forming apparatus, and detecting, compensating and correcting the phase shift of photoreceptor drums for four primary colors YMCK. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is equipped with a toner concentration sensor 26 and a reference concentration reflection plate 25 that is a semicircular plate for calibrating a concentration pattern near a transfer belt 11. The image of a test pattern is formed on the photoreceptor drums 21 for four primary colors YMCK so as to form the image of a test patch 51 on the transfer belt 11. An interval between the test patches is measured by the toner concentration sensor 26. The phase shift is detected by measuring an interval between clock pulses input in the toner concentration sensor 26 from the YMCK test patches. When the phase shift is detected, the phase alignment is performed by controlling the driving of the other photoreceptor drums YMCK in accordance with a maximum phase shift value.
