PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a screening apparatus improving separation effects on foreign materials and fibers of good quality in a papermaking raw material. SOLUTION: The screening apparatus 1 is obtained by dividing a vessel 3 into a first chamber 2A and a second chamber 2B, and includes: a cylindrical screen 2 separating the foreign materials in the papermaking raw material, having round hole-like or a slit-like openings in the lateral face and a height H larger than the diameter D and opened both ends and stood in the vessel 3 so that the direction of the height faces to the vertical direction in which both the ends are an upper opening 2D and a lower opening 2E; a first papermaking raw material feed passage 4; a second papermaking raw material feed passage 5, a first papermaking raw material feed port 4A located at a higher position than the upper opening 2D and a second papermaking raw material feed port 5A located at a lower position than the lower opening 2E, respectively; a stirring member 6 for stirring the papermaking raw material in the vessel 3; and a foreign material discharging passage 10 for leading the foreign materials without passing through the screen 2 in the papermaking raw material to the outside of the vessel 3.
