PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a medicine for inhibiting production of aggrecanase. SOLUTION: The aggrecanase production inhibitor contains at least one kind of carotenoid selected from the group consisting of compounds expressed by general formulae (1), (2) and (3), therapeutically permissible salts, ethers, esters and isomers thereof, wherein R1shows a hydrogen, an alkyl group, a cycloalkyl group, an aryl group, a heteroaryl group, an aralkyl group, a halogen, a hydroxy group or an alkoxy group, for which a heteroatom may be substituted; R2and R2' show each a hydrogen atom, a hydroxy group or an alkoxy group.
