The method involves providing a transmitter (102) e.g. user activated barrier movement-operator control code-transmitter, which contains a display (104). A vicinity/proximity of a body part e.g. hand, of a user (114) is sensed by proximity sensors for the transmitter. The display is activated, when the proximity of the body part is detected, to illuminate a section of the transmitter and to provide visibility of a transmission function for the user. An independent claim is also included for a user activated barrier movement-operator control- code transmitter comprising a sensor.
