<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight capable of mounting a slide lamp unit and ensuring a high degree of design flexibility. <P>SOLUTION: This backlight 20a comprises a light emitter L for emitting light from a top surface, a rectangular boxed cabinet with a frame F provided around the light emitter L, and slender lamp units 10a and 10b which are contained respectively in a first side frame F<SB>1</SB>and a fourth side frame F<SB>4</SB>facing mutally and constituting a frame F.
