PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimize the brightness of a main object (e.g. face region of a figure) without performing existing automatic exposure control, alteration of operating point of an imaging element, or alteration of gradation processing conditions from a linear image to a nonlinear image.

SOLUTION: When a captured image (linear image) is corrected, distinction processing of a photography scene is performed from a linear image processed to become constant at all times based on operating point setting information. Based on that distinction results, gradation processing conditions for the linear image are set and gradation conversion processing is performed. Subsequently, gradation conversion processing is performed for converting a linear image subjected to gradation conversion processing into a nonlinear image.
